Some time ago I replaced the fluid in both the diffs and I noticed that I had no metal shavings in the drain plug. Upon further inspection it didn't seem to be magnetized and as I had no shavings in the old fluid I didn't worry about it.

Yesterday I replaced the fluid in the transfer box and I noticed once again that none of the plugs (fill or drain) were magnetized.

From pictures I've seen around the interwebs I was under the impression that the plugs were always magnetized, to grab any metal shavings from transmission wear.

Am I mistaken and the factory P38 plugs are not magnetized ?

Does it make sense to change them with aftermarket magnetic ones on the next fluid change ?

And standard drain plugs are?

The standard Land rover. Drain plug and filler plug listed in Microcat is the same item and part number and they are NOT magnetic. Part number 608246 listed until MY 1998 nothing listed after that. So later models maybe but where do you buy one Rimmers don't list them either.

TYB500120 seems to be the current part number.
Island, paddock, lrdirect they all stock them.

Yes put that through Rimmers system and it came up as magnetic drain plug £4.92 including the dreaded VAT. Non magnetic listed for P38 is £7.07 Including VAT less magnet. Land rover prices are sometimes a little baffling. The magnetic one is not listed on the P38 parts list. TYB500120 is actually a Disco 2 part. In the interest of a complete answer transfer box drain plugs RTC6021 are not magnetic either. But Disco 2 transfer box drain plug STC4098 is but maybe a different size. :);)
