Diesel starter part number?

Hi there,

I've just pulled the starter out of my 1972 diesel SIII because although the starter engages with the engine and spins, it doesn't turn the engine.

I have found that on the front of the diesel starter is a type on one-way clutch which is knackered. Looking at the spares places, these are available as spare parts, but there are 3 options.

According to the LR parts book it depends on having starter motor part number 26321A, 26321B, 26321C, 26321D, or 27425.

Unfortunately my starter has none of these numbers, just the following:

26 64E 28 72 and then M4 12V

Can anyone help translate this?

Have you cleaned up the spinny thingy bit with teeth on at the end of the shaft?

It should flick out when the starter spins up.

You might find that all it needs is a good clean to make it work properly, as they do tend to get gunged up a bit over the years!

Also check that you have a good earth, as that is also a common problem with starters engaging and not turning the engine.

Check the battery and the lead from the battery to the starter. Mine had the same problem and we thought it was knackered but we checked it with a new battery and it worked fine, didn't help that the lead from the battery to the starter was frayed with the copper going green

When the starter is out get a mirror and try to have a good look at the ring gear. A ball ache to do but only about £20. Just be careful if you do remove the ring gear when drilling an 8mm hole to help cut it off that it does not spring off. Also look at the chamfer on the teeth to ensure the new one is fitted the right way up. 225 degrees in a domestic oven is about right.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have checked all those. The starter is definitely engaging with the ring gear. What is happening is that the gear on the end of the starter shaft is not turning even when the starter shaft is turning.

The problem is this part:

It should allow the gear to "slip" one way but not the other. Unfortunately it allows it to slip the other way too.

The part is replaceable for about £15, but I don't know which of the 3 available ones to get. - See below from the parts book:





Anyone know which is which?

As far as I know you can fit the starter from a 200 engine...prob a lot cheaper that a std series starter...not sure but may even spin it faster as I think they are geared...I stand to be corrected.
