Hi, 2 common places on FL1. It may be you have a small leak from the injector pump. They can be a little leaky when cold and usually seal themselves as the engine warms a little. Best way to check is open your bonnet when cold and the pump is on the front left of the engine. There's a black plastic cap on top of it and when you first start the engine (from cold) you will see fuel weep out. If it stops leaking within a few seconds I'd leave it until it becomes a problem as although its a small cheap seal removing the pump is a time consuming job.
Second to check is the diesel heater unit under the front bumper on the passenger side...mabybe just fumes from that?

Look for what looks like oil stains on the road where you park , drivers side front , my H P injector pump had started to leak on a regular basis , sump was covered , but could not see where the leak was from , smell of diesel got bad also , got a recon pump fitted , back to normal now :)

Could also be your Fuel Based Heater (FBH)

I thort that stood for Fuel Burning Heater???

My HP pump was leaking that bad it caused me to break down, if that's leaking don't wait for it to #### you over when you need the car most! Buy a seal kit, mine came in about £10-15 posted, plus the special tool to hold the fuel pump sprocket £35-45 posted, and get it done. It's not a hard job, just tight to get the bits where you need them.

I'm with Diesel Do on this one. The diesel return hoses are the most likely culprit if you're smelling diesel when you pull up. The hoses start splitting after 8 or nine years and are usualy only 'push to fit' so also get very loose. Just take off the engine acoustic cover and look at the condition of them.
