diesel running problems

Hi,

i've got another small problem with my 2.25 diesel now, and hoping someone can help with some suggestions of what could be wrong. The landy starts up as usual and ticks over nicely, however, if i drive about 300yards the engine cuts out as though there is no fuel (there is fuel!), it takes a couple of attempts to restart or i have to leave for a few minutes then it restarts. any ideas of what i could start checking to work out what the problem is?

does it start easier if you prime the fuel system, if so probably air leaks getting into fuel system

As it's a diesel just about the ONLY thing that can cause the engine to stop is no high pressure fuel at the injectors.

the usual cause is AIR getting into the system.

The usual cure is to clean out the self-bleeder hollow banjo bolt on top of the fuel filter. The bit you need to clear is the tiny hole in the SIDE of the banjo bolt.

Drill it out to at least 1mm if you can.

thank you for your suggestions, i will try to reprime the system first, I actually unretarded the distributor pump at the weekend and then put it back to where it was when i realised it had been retarded for a reason! maybe this was the cause of the problem, at least with the bank holiday it gives me a long weekend to look forward to faffing about with it! cheers for the advice.

Just an Idea...
I had a car which would run for a few miles, then conk out, sit for a few minutes, then off it would go again for a few miles, couldn't find anything wrong, then an old bloke told me to try running with the diesel cap off? Never missed a beat?? turns out, the breather in the diesel tank was blocked, so, as the engine consumed diesel, it created a vacuum in the tank until the pump couldn't pull the diesel through? Simple, but so annoying! Only good thing was, it was a cheap fix, rust had formed inside the breather where the rubber hose went on, drill bit used as a reamer cured the problem?

DO NOT expect diesel injection timing EVER to slip!
Therefore, don't waste time turning the pump in the vain hope of makinmg things better.

AIR AIR AIR!!!! You don't want ANY in the fuel.

Do you understand the self bleeder setup?
