Diesel Pre-heater smoking?

Hi there. First time on here, so apologies if this has come up before.

I have a FL 2.0 TDi SE on 54 plate and a couple of times in the past week I have noticed excessive smoke coming from a pipe (about 1 inch in diameter) which points vertically down just in front of the front wheel arch on the n/s. I'm led to believe that this is some sort of vent for a diesel pre-heater?

It doesn't seem to smoke excessively all the time - some times it's fine -and there doesn't seem to be any patterns to when it does and doesn't do it, although journies this week have been short and it's been colder. We have a warranty which expires at the end of December and I'm wondering if the smoking sounds abnormal enough for it to be worth taking it down to get it looked at.

Okay, found it. Didn't know it was called a 'fuel burning' heater which is why I hadn't found it in the manual. Many thanks.

they all do that sir. and you'll probably find the colder it is, the smokier it will be

And your car is a Td4, not a TDi

Ming, you heartless son of a good mother. Sorry but you lost me totally. I was so proud that I, since a couple of days, was aware of the existence of things like optimus prime and prowler etc. and now you come in here saying it's old news and worth to go along with Dad's Army ???:boink:
If you keep doing this I will be forced to, instead of coming onto this forum, go to Ming's bar and have a couple or more of :beer2: .
