Hello Chaps,

Some adice as I am abit green to the Disco world.

wither when I open the window or have the heating blowers on I get a horrible oil/diesel/burning smell come into the interior, really starting to make me feel sick.

Any advice as to what it could be would be appreciated

have you looked under the bonnet for signs of a leak ? - has the filler cap blown off ? has it been overfilled ?

Checked under the bonnet and everything is wher it should be, a really small oil leak but nothing major.
A chap at work thinks the smell could come from the gear box oil being low ( it also crunches into the 2nd gear at the bottom end) or a the cam belt rubbing?

Any thoughts?

good time to check if there is any oil it the tranny box/GB and engine

lack of oil in either would produce a burning smell, followed shortly afterwards by an expensive grinding noise

I will check the oil levels now and see if I can see any holes in the exhaust.

to check the exhaust you need someone with you to cover the backbox pipe to build up pressure for the second person to see if it blows but dont cover the pipe for too long otherwise you will damage your engine, cover for about 3 sec at a time.

The spill pipes that run along the injectors can seep out diesel which gets on the head and stinks. You then switch off the engine and open the bonnet and cannot find any problem as the diesel has evaporated.

I have experienced personaly a head gasket leak oil (engine running perfect with no loss of compression or water), the oil dripped on the exhaust manifold but only at speed and with a few revs on.

Just another idea or two?

Dave

Hello chaps,

Ok topped up all the oils and double and triple checked the exhaust system with no obvious signs.

Had a good look all over and I found that the rear door was not shutting properly, after closer inspection the bottom hinge had broken! :( not sure how or when this happened but the bottom pin had sheered off.

popped to the scrap yard got a replacement hinge ( £15 ) changed it over and the door now shuts perfectly and the smell has now gone!! :):)

The exahust fumes must of been getting into the car! wonder I didnt kill myself!

Cheers for all your help!
