Hi

I'm thinking of getting an LPG system to convert my 200tdi to run on diesel and LPG together. Companies selling them seem to suggest 20-30% saving in overall fuel costs, as well as a significant performance increase!

They say the main reason for saving fuel is due to the mix giving more bang, hence lower throttle positions can be used and hence less fuel gives the same power required. As well as this about 25% of the fuel going in is priced 60 odd pence less a litre.

Kit costs about £600 to fit yourself.

Has anyone got a land rover tdi (200 or 300) running lpg, and how much roughly do you actually save?? Is it as good as it sounds?!

If doing about 10,000 miles a year, a very quick calculation showed it should save about £600-700 a year at the current fuel costs..

Just done a few calculations..

With lpg at £0.76 and diesel at £1.39

Running a 30% lpg mix as seems to be suggested, a discovery tank of 85litres (ish) add 25.5 litres gas. Costing £137.40. Assuming 25mpg, times 30% (as is the suggested fuel economy gain) gives 31.25mpg and lets you get 719 miles per tank.

Running pure diesel, 85 litres costs £118, and at 25mpg - 467.5 miles per tank.

Convert this to price per 100 miles:
Standard - £25.25 per 100 miles
Dual fuel - £19.11 per 100 miles.

saving £6.14 per 100 miles!
If you do 10,000 miles per year, thats £614 saved!!

i.e. more than the cost of the kit in the first year.

Theres a couple small mistakes there, thats now sorted.
With mix and fuel eco gain at 30%, at £17.40 per 100 miles (saving £790 per year)
with mix and eco at 25% (as I think is probably a little more reasonable), its 18.40 per 100 miles (saving £690 per year)

Dont forget thats their figures so are probably optimistic.
I suppose the lack of replies kind of answers your questions.
I have seen a few trucks with the system fitted, all of them not now redundant so i guess they didnt pay for themselves
I did read an article in one of the landy mags by that knobhead Jerry that he fitted but never heard anymore on it.
Is the tdi tank as large as 85 litres?
