Having bought my 2.5 diesel project as a non runner with a partly stripped engine and being supplied a replacement engine when I picked it up I have no idea as to the history and what the previous owner did with the injection pump.

The diesel pump on the original engine was missing, seller has since told me he thinks he removed the injection pump off the original engine and fitted it to the replacement engine ready to install.

However I cannot be sure this is the case so my question is if the injection pump on the engine is not the original one for the car, will I get any warning or informational messages on the dash?

If not is there a way to tell?

I'm assuming if I crack one of the injector unions and I get diesel coming out then the pump is not disabled and engine should start (providing the rest of it is back together properly)

Pump has to be timed correctly within +- 0.001" in the correct position depending on mileage. You cannot just slap it on and expect it to be correct. Changing fuel injector pump, providing it is the correct one, should not bring up any warning messages.

check the part numbers stamped into the electronics of the pump, it is the bosch part number you are looking for and the correct number for a range rover p38 is a long number ending in 994.
any other numbers and it will not run. all the pumps and there is a range of numbers, the mechanical part of the pump is the same for all but electronics are the same.
all p38 and vauxhall omegas had the pump ending in 994 but bmws are a minefield of possibilities with two different pump mounting size holes large and small!

just another thought check the intake pump is working delivering fuel up to the injection pump when you turn the ignition on before checking fuel at the injectors as if the intank pump has failed it is a pig to bleed without it infact as i recall it took me 3 charged batterys to bleed my old dse up to the injectors!

Absolutely, have the kit to time the pump correctly with the exception of the locating dowel for the flywheel, not a problem to make this as I have a lathe

Yep, this is working, had the outlet pipe off the diesel filter and is pumping through with the ignition on

Will do when I get home tonight. Engine supplied is actually a P38 unit but the pump is an unknown

I posted the sizes for this a couple of weeks ago do you have them?

Not yet, did search a few weeks back and found the outer dia on this forum but there was some discussion as to the size of the hole in the flywheel.

If you have them to hand that would be great

130mm long.
Major diameter 11.96 mm.
Location pin 10mm long 7.90 mm diameter.

Aaarrrgh

After sorting the key fob/engine disabled issues I thought I was on the home straight, things took a dive tonight :(

Been trying to find the pump number but there is nothing stamped on the body, checked online for some pics of where it should be but it isn't there

Had the LR guy take a look at it today, plugged in his Autologic kit and the EDC codes match what is in the BECM so no worries there.

Have the pipe off one of the injectors and no diesel coming through.

Checked lift pump and there is diesel pumped through to the injection pump, the stop solenoid is doing its thing and the return pipe is sending diesel back to the tank

:mad::mad:

Spent a few hours on it yesterday and managed to find the pump number and it does end in 994.

Stripped off the manifold and checked all the connections to the pump and they seem OK.

Double checked the lift pump and it deliveres a nice stream of fuel to the pump.

Fuel shutoff valve has power to it and it is working as expected

Stripped off the belt tensioner and FIP shaft is turning with the engine

Should the FIP buzz when the ingnition is turned on? Mine does and I'm pretty sure my Freelander diesel with the Bosch VP37 pump used to as well but pretty sure my old Frontera with a VP37 pump didn't

Question now is am I looking at a replacement FIP or is there something I've missed?

there's a common prob that i've had happen a couple of times where the engine ecu doesn't talk to the becm (i think that right), the first time this happened to me I did all the same checks as you, in the end took it to be code read and they recoded the engine ecu to the becm and started straight up (wish i did that first)

I also thought my pump had, had it as there was fuel to it and the stop solenoid worked but there must be something else in there to stop it pumping.

hi

done that already, had a LR guy over last week and he plugged his Yearbook in and checked the codes etc so it should ne good to go

is there diesel at the injectors when you crack off the pipes? and crank it? is there a feed to the glowplugs? are the glow plugs any good might be an idea to take the plugs out and test whilst the manifold is off.

yep, pipes were cracked off and are now removed, there is no diesel out of the pump to the injectors
