Diesel heater install

Made a good start on installing a diesel heater in my 90 today...

Decided to make up a bracket and fit it at the rear of the seat box, underneath / behind the centre panel. I've utilised all existing / standard holes so haven't had to drill the body anywhere.

It bolts up to the panel behind the seat box using 4 existing holes, and I added some additional mounts to bolt to the lower part of the panel, again using a couple of existing holes to mount to.

If I did it again I'd a) pay more attention to the orientation, avoiding drilling unnecessary holes (!) and b) mount it a little lower, I can just get an Allen bolt into the upper bolt holes, but they do go in so no panic.

Just need to tidy it up and give it a paint, then I can install and hook it up in time for the Summer :-/

A couple of questions - where is the best place to Tee into the diesel pipe? the fuel tank is right next to it and so the pipe is very accessible, should I go high or low, near or far from the tank? And also, once I've Tee'd into it am I going to introduce air into the system and will that matter?

Nice, good to see more installations around ere, they're incredibly cheap and Defenders are incredibly draughty.

I will vent it into the drivers footwell, in between the handbrake and the transmission tunnel so it isn't blowing directly on my legs. Thats the only hole I will have to make...

I've just fitted a 5kw under the centre console in my lwb
It's the best mod lve done so far

5kw? Do you drive with the doors off

I would be interested to know peoples views on a tee into the fuel line for supply, feed or return ? or drill one of the plates in the top of the tank (maybe gauge) and pop a pipe in there for the heater pump to draw on.

I would put a separate feed to the tank.

I would rather a separate tank and let it burn cherry, save the dear stuff for the motor

Just so happens that I have a left hand fuel tank for a 90, plenty of supply there

They honestly burn bugger all diesel, i had one running for 24 hours in test at 30-40% and the fuel gauge didn't move.

I fitted one of these for the fuel pick up

2 jubilee clips and slice the fuel filler pipe, job done.

Yeah but I have to buy the white one, the red one I can have a few gallons here and there for free

That’s a great post / idea, thank you. I don’t quite understand how it is fitted though could you elaborate please? It says TD5 but I don’t see how or why it is specific to that engine.

It will probably be the diameter of the filler. TD5 onwards has a different diameter to pre TD5.

That makes sense - they only seem to do kits for the 110 or TD5 so that isn’t going to work for me. Shame.

Looking at options for tapping the tank, Ideally with a top mounted pipe.

Is yours a metal tank? Some of them have unused breathers on the sides. You could drill/open one of them, and insert a pick up that way. It’s significantly easier than trying to access the top of the tank.

Yes it is metal, and as a 90 it is under the drivers seat below a screw in panel so not that hard to access, although I am not sure about drilling it in situ.... I will have a look at it properly this weekend to see if there’s any other way of taking a feed from it.

Missed the 90 part of the first post. I wouldn’t drill it in situ, but seeing as the access is very good, I would go in through the plate in the top of the tank.

The filler pipe that you place the fuel nozzle into at the pump. Where ( on my 110 ) it travels down and slides over the tank input pipe. If you come back up about 30-40mm, slice the pipe all the way around and fit this in the gap ( ie slide the filler pipe over both ends, 2 jubilee clips and tighten)

It allows the end of the pick to sit just above the bottom of the tank and you fit your fuel line to the other end..jobs done

Thanks mate, I worked it out in my head last night but unfortunately they don't seem to do a version for the 90, the only options listed are Puma TD5 or 110, presumably they have a different diameter filler neck to mine.

Either that or the entry into the tank is different on a 90 as the tank is under the seat so higher up?
