I've a X3 in for an engine swap, dead lower broken chain wrecked the head... maybe not a good call...

There was a hd kit available a few year ago with a duplex chain and reinforced crank cog.

Not for mpg or performance but maybe reliability. The later diesel engines are way better although also bigger so performance per cc might not be as good.

I don't think there has ever been a really good diesel in a Range Rover, I only know the VM from boats but apart from cylinder head failure on some versions, it was a strong engine.

Lad has one, he says the fuel gauge acts like a speedo the faster you go the quicker it goes down.

Or if you want an engine that'll last but rattle your teeth out and be very slow etc the 200tdi is hard to beat.
