Diesel cab heater

Hello. Has anybody fitted one to a discovery 1? Im thinking of fitting one into the engine bay. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Search WEBASTO, Engine bay isnt usually recommended, usually tap into the fuel tank and locate under at the back somewhere internally depending on vehicle.

Wherever you fit it, think of future servicing/fault finding on the diesel heater.
I have one of the cheap chinese ones on a boat, and have to say it is pretty good.

Thanks for the replies. Im thinking of removing the non working aircon. Making a box and fitting it there. I would run the heater outlet pipe through bulkhead into the cabin somewhere. Ive seen them mounted on the chasis before but they look hard to get to to repair and service. It will have its own fuel supply

No need to mount in a box they are reasonably tough, even if water gets in and screws the ecu, a new ecu and timer is about 40 quid.

Get the smaller 2/5kw unit, the larger 5/8kw one is a chunky monkey.
If listing says 2/5 kw it is a 2 kw machine, and if it says 58 kw it is a 4/5kw machine!
I would use a fuel standpipe and take fuel from the main fuel tank, less messy/smelly in the cabin.

Thanks again for the advice. I could take the cd autochanger out and mount under the seat. I would like to run it from a seperate fuel supply as i can get red diesel. Is there room under the seat in a 300tdi for one?

The amount of diesel it uses is not worth the bother of a seperate fuel supply, mine is a d2 so have no advice for a 300tdi.

Iirc at full bore they use 1/2 a litre an hour.
Maybe mounts the heater under the seat as per Hughes pics, then fit the red tank under the bonnet?

There is a few FB pages for the chinese diesel heaters, and some people reckon poor fuel causes issues with carboning up the burner chamber, always worth an ask.

I would think that is an over-estimate on the fuel consumption. My 4KW diesel stove uses 0.2 of a litre an hour on low flame, 0.4 of a litre on high flame.

A lot of people on the cut have the chinese fuel heaters, and they like them.
They may not be quite a good as an Eberspacher, but at a third the price, you can afford to replace the whole thing if it goes tits up.

I am unsure of current eber/webby prices, but I do know the spares I needed to repair the broken webasto on our boat were 50 quid more than a whole new chinese heater!

I had the Eberbascher on my old boat and it worked very well. Great idea to put in the Disco, under the seat. I will look at getting the Chinese copy as a lot of boat owners use them and are very happy with them.

a stove isn't a heater though is it next time i run a heater i'll see how much fuel it uses on full chat

The cabin of a Disco is a very small space and does not need a lot of Kw to keep it warm, the heater is off more than its on, and then only on tick over. Then there is the chance of being pulled by the ministry, and trying to explain red diesel, with the new tax laws.

It is a heater, and runs 3 radiators as well as heating a tank of water via a calorifier.
It doesn't do cooking.

But my point was actually that a 2.5 KW output of heat should use less fuel than a 4KW output, irrespective of the actual means of combustion. In fact, I would think the Eberspacher type heaters should be more efficient than a diesel vapourising type as well.

I think i will get one of the smaller 2kw heaters measure up when it gets here and pick the most suitable place for it. Im now thinking it would be best fitted under drivers or psssenger seat. .

Hello. Just a update on cab heater. I opted for a 2kw heater from ebay sold by maxpeeding rods. Heater arrived quickly with all the parts. I fitted it under the passenger seat. I had to cut out the cross brace for the seat mount. I have made and fitted a bolt in cross brace. Heater install was a little tricky i had to extend some of the wires. I fitted a fuel tank under the bonnet where the jack goes. Heater works perfectly and gets very warm quickly.
