Died a noisy and SMELLY death!

Hi All,

The rear dif, and the IRD have died... a very noisy and smelly death!

We noticed a rather odd smell, whilst driving to collect new puppy, plus the gundog, and the guard dog in the back!! Breaking down with 2 dogs and soon an 8week old puppy is not something I wish to repeat in a hurry! but thankfully had a very understanding aa man!!

So after so long of this funny smell, we put it down to the crop fields.. but then it was unbearable... and right after we thought something is wrong here... the noise came!!

Loud groaning and whistling from what seemed the front, and then very loud knocking/clunking from the back.. pulled over, and oil was splattered all over the back of the car.. looked underneath and the dif had basically pooped itself..

So.. is it common for the IRD and the rear dif to die at the same time?

For a quick fix until we have the money, is it possible to remove the IRD/prop and run on 2wd? Or does the IRD have to remain? and obviously the noise would remain? and therefore can't be done?

In a panic, as shooting season here :), we will soon be out picking up, and will NEED the 4wd, but for time being, can I run on 2WD and it not cost me loads of money!?

That is a very good question...:eek: and am ashamed to say... never.. as I 'thought' the dif oil in there was basically life long.. as in, it only has a certain life, and when it runs out, then thats it...
 
Search for mondo mode re the two wheel drive option, but it'll depend on the damage done to your rear diff. It'll still be idling along as it's connected to the rear wheels & if it's seized, it won't want to turn even as a passenger. Also, I think the front diff has something to do with the ird so it'll depend on how much damage is done to that as well.
 
The front diff has everything to do with the IRD as the IRD contains the front diff, the reduction gear and the pinion gear that turns the transverse drive chain through 90 degrees to drive the central prop shaft. The general feeling seems to be that if the IRD is damaged then you can take the prop off and drive 2WD. This is not a cure if the IRD is damaged as the oil turbulance can draw any debrit into the rest of the gear train. This is likely to result in additional bangs and thumps and calls to the AA. Removal of the IRD is not an option as the front drive shafts have nothing to gain drive from without it, oh, and all the oil would fall out of the main gearbox.
 
Nasty and not what you want.

Jack it up on one side with two wheels off, take the prop off and check the IRD and rear diff by spin front/rear wheels in turn............... I fear your rear diff is kaputt,

Thanks.. I know pretty much the rear diff is kaputt sadly, so to confirm it has, I am putting it up on two wheels, and turning front/back, and if the clunking etc is there, then 100% its gone?

What about the IRD, how will I know if the IRD is kaputt aswell? or if its just making the noises etc due to the rear diff? Sorry, confused, and thanks in advance!

Yes and no.... it moves... but its bloody noisy from the rear, with the clunking etc. Then when you are moving, there is a VERY loud whining noise from the front. When it was taken off the loader, I then parked it up, and it seemed a lot tighter..
 
It might be way too late to check the ird oil level,but a top up might cure it up a bit.I haven't read all the posts but maybe the diff bushes are fugked .That idea might be shot down by someone more intelligent than I.

I hope you have a haynes manual.
 
I would definitely not drive it even in mondo mode. It sounds as though both the front and rear hypoid drives have been damaged. The clunking will come from the sudden impact when the gear pairs come to a missing tooth and remesh. The whining from the IRD is probably due to gear tooth debris getting into the bearings and causing them to skid. The balls come out square and purple through heat. Very painful, especially for your wallet! Hard luck,
Of course the overloading may have originated through VCU seizure so check that as well.
 
It should be obvious when you spin the front wheels backwards and forwards, any lumpiness needs further investigation.

As others have said already .....check the IRD oil (and possibly gearbox oil), drain the oil and look for shards of metal in the oil and on the magnetic IRD plug.

If nothing is obvious drive it deadly slow with someone listening for odd noises when the transmission is taking up the drive.


Just curious............ how far did you travel after the noises started?

Thanks all - much appreciated!

We have decided to break it if costs to repair are over 1k! Even getting it back to 2wd for the time being isn't really an option now, as need the 4wd NOW. So would just be delaying the spend... which isn't worth doing over over 1k. Hate breaking cars in the winter! but needs must!!!!!
