Thinking of getting a Nanocom Evo for Disco TD5. I got some info from Bearmach on the Hawkeye Total as it looked great and open to all Land Rovers, but it is slightly limited compared to Nanocom. It won't calibrate SLS for example. £390 for Nanocom so a big outlay. Any opinions, updates or know anyone selling one ???

I bought Nanocom and it is good.
Other than setting up some spare keys I haven't needed to do much else.
I'd still recommend as there is a good web forum and loads of data and advice out there too.

Just went through the process of buying one from Blackbox as I had bit the bullet on the cost. £32 for delivery  That's taking the P*** a bit !!!

Yes I know it all seems a bit dear at the start, but having a TD5 vehicle without a diagnostic code reader is like fencing in the dark. If you think what it would cost every time you looked for error codes or cleared them by taking it to a garage, it's not that bad. Pus the similar Hawkeye or Lynx systems are comparable, and the TD5 doesn't quite match the standard OBD format used on later cars, so it's just one of those unfortunate costs of ownership I'm afraid, You can also head off some problems by responding to the error codes before it breaks down - for example when the injector loom is going you get 'peak charge long' errors well before the engine starts running rough or dies completely.

u would need a defibrillator if u found out what a reader costs for a D3 , lol

Lol....I did notice the cost of these. Obviously a more up to date vehicle relevant to todays market. D2 is now becoming a bit of a dinosaur, but still needs fixing now and again :(

funny enough when i was looking i just couldn’t find a D2 with a decent chassis, then looked at a L322 , ins was too high then this project D3 came up, knew it needed some work but bloody hell taken around a year to put right the bodge ups , but must admit my favourite landy so far , mind u , still like the 110 CSW, but silly money along with not many autos , well unless i wanted a V8 , lol

surprising how many D3s are starting to come on the market , think many of them need timing belts , air suspension sorting out , ie compressors / bushes , etc

indeed the Gap iid are staying around the £420 range, but blimey talk about pay for itself quickly , JLR want £120 to just read the codes

I have never had a D3, but brother in law did. He has a bit of money about him and knows his cars. He has had Audi, Merc, BMW etc and all top of the range stuff. He got rid of the D3 due to some turbo problems, but he still says it was his favourite car to drive out of them all.

oh wow , likes his motors then, lol

mine had the turbo issue, actuator arm was sticking , loose jubilee clip and reflashed the ecu with some updated software to motor the turbo actuator arm when the ign is turned on and off , helps to prevent it sticking

turbo VGT vanes get coked up so turbo overboosts and goes into limp mode

haven’t seen many who are actually req to replace the turbo, plenty of garages just saying it needs a new turbo , bit normally the arm or hose , turbo replacement can actually be done with the body on , a right pig though , also front and rear timing belts don’t need the body removing

has taken time learning how the more complicated systems work, indeed wouldn’t stand a chance without some form of code reader and multimeter

really looking forward when it’s done to see how it does greenlaning , did get a new set of cooper AT/3 tyres fitted

Nanocom ordered. Thanks for the feedback from those who replied. I would have liked a bit more advice from those on here who have a Nanocom or Hawkeye but if folk can’t be bothered what can you do. Thanks @brian47 for your advice and help.

Nanocom is a good bit of kit, be careful with it you can make life interesting for yourself.

Cheers

As @neilly has said, be careful with it.
Don't go looking for trouble with it, that way lies a world of hurt! By all means you will want to see what it can do when you first get it, but trust your instincts first.
Don't get into the situation of saying things like "my suspension says one thing on the right and something else on the left". If the car looks straight and that's the way it was set when it was new (the settings don't change on their own) then there's nothing to worry about.
Don't change any settings to you vehicle unless you're sure about what it is you're changing.
If in doubt, ask.

Save all the settings when you get it, this is possible with the nanocom.

Just in case you have a brain fart...LOL

Cheers
