Depressing news from the garage - What to do?

yes , as rear main oil seal is clamped with a gasket to block face and rear main bearing , its not inkown for the ali seal housing to warp allowing oil leak in the same place , i use silicone to seal main brg cap and joints

a thicker oil wouldn't help to get it past the mot would it?

That would actually make a lot of sense, because the T seals look ok to me and I made a real effort to check and double check them.

I had assumed that the oil seal would cause a leak into the bell housing, but it seems to be more likely than T seals.

Well I'm definitely not dropping the gearbox on my driveway and I guess that if the gearbox is out, I may as well get it sorted at the same time.


Sorry James, I should really know this by now, but do you still refurb gearboxes? I've never noticed you mentioning your business on here so can PM if you prefer, but I would much prefer to send the business your way if you can/would be willing to take this on, and assuming that the garage will agree to me choosing where the gearbox is sent!

Bloody hell, they are cheap, thanks! Considering the small fortune that has gone into the engine, this not sounding all that bad!

the seal itself leaking would leak into bellhousing ,but a leak from the ali housing / gasket would leak from between bellhousing and engine

This is definitely starting to sound like the problem and would explain why SO much oil is pouring out.

I will relay this to the garage, but I guess it's a gearbox out job anyway...

if you get the proper gasket it has sealant impregnated to seal cap joints

I had my gearbox reconditioned by Bristol Transmissions. No issues so far (fingers crossed! )

Ffs, pull yourself together man, and go to a different garage, it strikes me that they dont really know what they are doing, did they suck in through their teeth when they broke this depressing news to you?

Since when has a bump stop been an MOT failure? Mine has been missing two at the back for the last three MOT's, its never even been an advisory.

Its good to see other member rallying around to help someone out

I like this garage. They have always been very honest with me, I get a discount on labour and it's walking distance from my office.

The closest alternatives are around 20 mins away, which is not practical.


But point taken on pulling myself together....

Agreed. For all of the p!ss taking and banter, there are an amazing bunch of people here!

My shock bushes are ok because I replaced them a few months ago, but thanks for the offer!

In that case do what you can yourself, my first thing would be to remove the sump and make sure its sealed up properly, the seals between tranny and gearbox is a fairly easy thing to do, if you do have to remove the gearbox its not as awfull as it sounds. A large percentage of doing jobs like this is having the confidence to do them, if you havent done it before I can understand you being hesitant, if you have done it before its usually a case of ''bloomin hell, here we go adain''.
