A lot of people recommend "nightbreaker" bulbs, but the standards should be OK. Dim headlights are quite a common problem, easily sorted with an aftermarket (or home made) loom replacement. Have a search on here.
I've got newer osram nightbreaker laser bulbs in mine and it made a massive difference to the old osram bulbs I took out(Not sure what they were). Would probably say the full beam is better than my 18 month old Golf, although the full beam on that is a lot worse than my old Focus.
