Being sold as parts only, it’s from a company, it could be a customer who never paid their bill, I will do some more investigating
Thanks

A customer who had never paid their bill? Whilst I do not know what the legal remedy is for a garage who's customer has not paid their bills, why is the VIN missing? If the company has the legal right to sell the vehicle to recover their outstanding invoices any surplus should go to the owner of the vehicle. Hence they should have the contact details of the owner.

I would first be checking out that company on sites such as company house including the directors of the company. Who is the rightful owner of this vehicle. From DVLA you should be able to find out the registered keeper of the vehicle and see what their story is.

Check out the tax, MOT and insurance status of the vehicle before parting with your cash.

You could pay good cash for it but if the 'company' has no legal right to sell the vehicle, the actual real owner could claim it back and you are out of pocket.

Wow.

No paperwork, no vin plate and your thinking of buying?

That could come back and bite you in a very bad way.

There is literally no reason not to have paperwork or vin plate. The seller can request new paperwork and vin doesn’t ever need to be removed In any normal situation.....

Walk away.

A few in out local auction rooms come through with no docs to hand, even ex-Police stuff ...

If you go for it make sure you get a receipt from the vendor stating exactly what you are buying and stating chassis / paperwork not available. Also get the receipt to include engine number and both gearboxes numbers, could even try and get some photos added to the receipt (or signed as a true likeness of what he is selling). Don't know how much it would help if you do have any issues later but at least it would prove you haven't stole the bits!

You can buy insurance against fraudulent sales from companies ...

Thank you for this advice, it seems strange as you say, and the legal implications are real.
I will do some further investigating before I proceed,
Regards and thanks

Good morning

I’ve been offered a Land Rover Defender without any paperwork, will I be able to apply for a log book ? If the Vin plate is missing can I use the number from the Chassis and engine number ?

Thank you

The VIN plate can be replaced with a blank one from ebay if you're that way inclined, as long as the number is still visibly stamped on the chassis that is the ID of the vehicle.
To get a v5 you need to know the reg. number. If in any doubt get the owner to apply for it and give him the £25 if he gets it.
Good advice to check the vehicle details on the dvla website-if its already taxed you're onto a loser!

Thank you, great advice, so reg number is the key, silly question, can I obtain the reg number from the VIN number via DVLA ?

Its not something they like to do, I had to do it when I lost the details and log book from an old series 3 I had in a barn for years number plates had got lost but because it was registered in my name they did it.
Thats why I said get the owner to do it and the DVLA might be more sympathetic I must say it does all sound pretty suspicious though.

So there is a 'company' selling a vehicle without the V5, without the VIN and without the number plate??

I would say that alarm bells are not ringing but clanging so loud that I am stone deaf!

No legit company would have a vehicle with no identification for sale. Recently spoke to a legit 4x4 breakers and they explained the paperwork trail they had to keep before they could issue a COD (Certificate of Destruction)

If it was me I think I would be having a few quiet words with local trading standards/police.
