Hi I'm looking to take this out and change it for something else like a mercedes om606.

I have only been able to find out a little bit of info about doing the conversion so far and was wondering if any one on here has done it or trying it?

So when the time comes this engine and everything to fit it in a defender will be forsale.

Im hopefully doing a om606 into a RRC but not soon.

I think its only been done once so far by a guy on LR4x4

Worthwhile conversion though.

Think BMW box and om603 fuel pump is recommended

Ok cheers yeah I have found out about the pump it's everything else :/

Any ideas what the box is out of as I've just broke a 320d 6speed.

The only other things I'm worried about is the diffs/axels as there is going to be a big power increase.

tacr2man gave me some pretty good info on fitting a BMW M57 from a 330d or 530d.

Sounds a pretty good upgrade to 200bhp without too many changes.

Think that is what I will be doing as my next project.

I haven't really looked into fitting a bmw engine as I'm not sure how to get round all the electrics on them.
As the om606 used a mechanical om603 pump for the conversion.

I think (and I am no mechanic), that if you buy an actual car with the engine in, you can then just move the ECU and imobilizer over along with the engine and I guess some sensors.

tacr2man gave me a list of stuff to do, and I don't want to share it without his permission, but there is a list of about 20 things to do and most of them are LR parts. Send him a PM if you are interested.

Oh rite ok. I'm not keen on having to many electrics and an ecu as it will still be used off road so its likely to get wet.
I would think about it a lot more if I was just going to have it for road use.

Good point.

I think mine will be mostly on road with some expeditions and stuff, guessing the BMW diesel is more refined. The guy who did the upgrade did keep the R380 though, so I guess it should be fine for what you are going to put in it.

Anyway, mine is a long long way away!

For uses like that the bmw would probably be the better engine.

I am struggling to find much about mounting a gearbox up to the mercedes engine.
I have read somewhere someone cut the bell housing of a mercedes gearbox and welded it to the land rover one.
That's not to much of a problem for me as I'm a welder so can do that easy but it's weather the standard box can take the power.

When fitting the bmw engine do people still keep the land rover gearbox?

I wouldn’t use a landy gearbox would blow up with any bit of tuning. Think the bmw box mounts to a lt230 with an adapter shaft off of the back of the gearbox

Abit like that? Well I have a 6speed box out a 320d so I might hang onto that for a minute and see if it will mount up to the mercedes engine.

Yeah the bmw isn't to long but I think it might be a bit of a squeeze with a setup like that.
I could maybe move the transfer box back abit but would then need to make new front and rear props.

Well I've had a very good find engine and pump that I need now to get all the other bits.
