Hi there, at my wit's end and am looking for some electrical gurus!

I have installed full wipac led indicators, side lights and an Led headlamp with built in indicator halo.

All has been fine, I upgraded the relay to a wipac led relay and I also replaced the telltale signal light to prevent trickle. It's worked absolutely perfect until I try and upgrade the side indicator, the only one that isn't LED. (On the wing)

The fault as follows:

Flashes fine with the new wing indicator LED but then after a while it faulters, all indicators flicker and then it repeats over and over with seemingly no pattern. It then corrects itself and they all work again until the fault reoccures.

I have checked the earthing and it's fine, I even earthed the sidelight separately and it still did the same thing, which to me suggests something to do with the live feed?

What am I missing here?

Thank you so much in advance!

I’m not certain, but I think the issue is to do with the tell tale, even with the “upgrade”. The only way I could get my side repeaters to LED, was to upgrade to the TD5 dash with individual LEDs for left and right hand tell tale.

If I were you, I would search for the “Indicator diode mod”. It puts 2 diodes in before the tell tale and will allow side repeater LEDs.

What side indicators are using?

Hi Mick, thanks for the reply.

The upgrade I did was behind the dash with an RDX earth kit.

I will definitely look into your suggestion, where would I find the diode fix? I am trying to install some side sweep LEDs. What I can't understand is why normal bulbs work but these ones won't?

Many thanks for your response.

I have seen these new side sweep repeaters, but I have never had one in my hands to find out how it works. I would guess it’s a simple chip driving the LEDs?

I don’t know how the earth fix works, but if you google something like “defender LED repeater diode mod”, it should come up.

I’m ready to take some flak for this but,

I still don’t know why people toss this tat at Defenders.
LED side lights?
What happens when they get wet? What if they stop working, you can’t just change a bulb. The good thing about Defenders is the lack of complex systems.
If you want fancy electronics buy the new Defender.

I watch a Britannica Resortations video on Youtube on this issue and Mike had to leave one normal side indicator bulb in for the LED's to work.

Thank you very much for the replies, I'll have a look at them over the weekend and let you all know how I get on. I still can't quite get my head around why it's doing it, but perhaps it will explain itself the further I dig.

In response to lightning:

I understand your argument but these units are fully sealed ip68 waterproof, so water won't be an issue thus elongating the life expectancy of the units. I'd had enough with old bulbs blowing and contacts wearing out all the time so I decided to purchase LED's and it's proven to be the best mod so far, not to mention increased visibility for both me and other users over the dim OEM units.

Had the units almost three years now and had no problems at all... Except for... Yep you guessed it, my wing indicators kept blowing... The only non led units

If you buy decent quality units, Wipac, they are completely sealed and will far outlast any incandescent light. They are also brighter, allowing you be seen more clearly, and consume far less power than incandescent, ensuring the old electrical systems are given an easy life.

Each to their own though.

Totally with you on this, I have done the front lighting loom mod, which was simple enough, and kept all bulbs as standard fitment. Wherever I am I can just go into a supermarket and buy a replacement if needed, KISS - Keep It Simple Stu***, it's a defender, not a bmw or audi ffs.

In over 100,000 miles of driving a standard specification Defender TD5, l’ve never had anyone pull out on me because they didn’t see me, or ever been told that my vehicle isn’t visible enough.

They tend not to pull out in front of me either, despite the colour scheme.:p:p:p

So does that mean we should all go back to standard lights?

Each to their own, surely?
