Defender windscreen wiper question

Not sure if anyone can help with this one.

When I use my wipers they overshoot one way and then hit the drainage channel on the return.

Do I need to replace the lot or is there a part in particular that can be replaced to rectify this issue.

Seems like slop in the system,check big nut on wiper motor output not come loose.

Lift the wipers off the screen and you'll probably find a fair bit of play in the mechanism, usually caused by worn worm gears.
The motor has an adjuster on the bottom that can remove play there, but you'll probably find that the linkage and wheel boxes are worn as well.
Ours went after two years caused by "worm gear wear" according to the dealer (it was still under warranty) The replacement was still perfect when we sold the Defender 90 to buy a 110, six years after that.

Sounds like your arms are too long ...

Anyone else got what you have ? Ask them to measure the arm length from spindle to wiper pivot point ...

Just a thought from out of the box ... ( I'll climb back in soon)

Mine do this on occasion, I get a super big sweep sometimes, then smaller ones. I dunno. I just live with it!

If this oversweeps all of the time and there is only a small amount of play then I suggest that you strip the motor and check the MOTOR CRANK GEAR to see what it is rated at.

There should be a number stamped on it showing degrees of sweep.

The OP is reporting what I have found in all Defenders of a certain age, erratic wipers.

Fine for a while they then over and under sweep. Basically the whole mechanism is crap, the materials and actuation crap. The Britpart replacement system is also crap.

Its just another item on the 'Crap' list that Landrover ignored for half a century.

As an aside back in the early 80's it was a revelation to me that the BL/BMC wiper rack system as deployed in the Defender was not universal and that the Japanese had placed a bushed arm assembly including the motor within the engine bay (all cars that I had experienced had the mech and motor under the dash board until then) - the result near silent wipers.

I hate it when it rains in the Defender.

There's nothing wrong with the wiper mechanism on my 2005 TD5. There's no play, no erratic operation, and they don't overshoot the screen.
So it CAN be right.
On my 1997 300 tdi there's a bit of play in the mechanism, but the wipers are not erratic in operation and they don't overshoot the screen.
On our 2006 90 TD5 the motor was replaced under warranty as the wipers developed play. The replacement parts lasted six years and were still fine when we sold it.
I think it may be due to insufficient grease on the mechanism during assembly, causing more rapid wear?

The 2012 I get to drive is fine also but the mech is noisy and the wipers distinctly wipe at different speeds dependent on how much water is on the screen.

Essentially the system is inadequate but functioning, knowing how cheaply made the whole rotten collection of parts is I guarantee it will conform to the breed standard in a few years time.

Anyone know what a G Wagen's like?

I must have a good one then, as the speed is hardly affected by the amount of water on the screen, although it's a bit slower when there's none at all.
I guess the mechanism dates back over thirty years, like the door "seals" and "main beam"
