Defender windscreen replacement, difficult?

First post so bare with me

my windscreen seal is old and cracked so I decided I new one was in order, not fancying doing it myself I decided to give Autoglass a ring, long story short they wanted £130 odd just for the seal alone plus extra £££ for fitting, I've found windscreen seal on eBay for £20 odd, so my question is do I let Autoglass pull my pants down or attempt it myself? How difficult can it be??

Tips. If the screen is good. Cut the seal off whilst glass is in situ. Clean the aperture Good and proper. You need 6-8 tough string or rope. I bought a roll of rope washing line.

Have you ever strung in a windscreen. There is a technique. The aperture has to be very well lubricated for the defender screen or you'll probably crack it trying to tap in that troublesome last corner.

I would of put a crack in it myself and just let the insurance deal with it. But........ It's a rebuild project and so isn't insured

so guess I've got to attempt it, thanks chunkymunky for the tips am guessing plenty of washing up liquid and pray not for a cracking sound

Also got told to use a genuine new seal as they are more flexible than cheaper aftermarket products.

See if you can talk to the lads at Autoglass or wherever, NOT the monkey on the counter, the lads doing the fitting, they will usually do foreigners after work for cash, might be worth a try

Plenty of washing up liquid start at the middle bottom an finish at top middle have someone on the outside of screen keeping pressure on as you pull the string from inside easy job

I found the aftermarket one a bit iffy to say the least.
Got it on in the end but that was after a lot of thumb breaking work getting the various channels to unstick and open sufficiently.

I replaced my original screen for a heated one and I did attempt it but I was getting anywhere fast. I used loads of fairy liquid and good rope but I guess I was just too scared as I have heard horror stories about it cracking the last bit they attempt. I got autoglass to do it as a homer and it cost me 40 quid. Money well spent i thought?

Thanks for the info guys job well done, got it in today, cut the old seal out new seal went in without problems, plenty of fairy really helped!
