Hi all

Thinking of replacing the Series 3 with a Defender. Just road tested a 110
(1998) Td5.

An obvious "clunk" as slack taken up when changing between gears - even with
a very gentle clutch release. Not experienced anything like it in the Series
3.

Has anybody any ideas before I make a decision?

Many thanks in advance

John

Well John - I just had the very same clunk. Nursed the gear change
whilst waiting for the next service. But - on Sunday, when overtaking
the transmission went BANG. The Hardy Spicer, between the transfer
box and the front differential broke. There, I suggest, may be the
source of the problem that you have identified. It is the case, of
course, that this is not an expensive fix.

My ninety had a clunk similar to what you describe. Turned out to be a
combination of the rear 'A-frame' ball joint and worn splines on the front
propshaft. Front prop is easy to check. With the car in neutral, diff
unlocked, grab the prop either side of the splined joint and twist it as
hard as possible in each direction a couple of times. If there is any play
whatsoever, it needs changing. (approx £60 -£70 from paddocks) not a
difficult job.

Stew.
