Hi all. Hope you’re all keeping well.
I have a couple of quick questions.
I know MAF has been covered loads of times but I’m still not sure if mine is kaput.
Using nanocom, at idle it’s reading minimum 63 but closer to 67 most of the time. Which I understand is high - should be 55ish?
Flat out up hill at 2,850 rpm with the engine working hard, it’s barely getting over 500. It should be 550+? All the readings I’ve done it’s never got close to 550.
Can they read high AND low?
Anyway - It’s had a mild remap - nothing silly (Mike at Dynachip - well known). But as I understand the MAF, it’s simply reading airflow so shouldn’t be affected by the remap? The ECU would control the fuelling and if the MAF is reading low, the ECU would under fuel? It definitely seems to run out of steam - feels like there is more to give. It’s pretty lively low/middle range but definitely runs out of breath.
So getting to the actual question - If it’s not the remap - is the MAF shot?
Second question. Genuine LR part (£160). Or is an £80 Siemens still good?
Thanks!

Unplug it and see if it drives better, best way.

I got bored of mine so had it mapped out

Hi bankz5152. I should have said that I ran it with and old one that I absolutely know doesn’t work - didn’t notice much difference. Which I guess would suggest that it’s no good?

I've just fitted a new MAF to my defender TD5. The readings were zero previously so I figured it was finished. Fitted a new one and I get about the same readings as you. A massive difference in performance for me on low end pick up.

It’s great when simple fixes can make such a big difference! Did you fit a genuine LR part btw or Siemens?
Sounds like mine might not be kaput then - but I’ll get my multimeter out at the weekend and do the test @Scooby22 has suggested just to make sure.

Hi Shrubby - I just fitted a Britpart one, its about £12. I've pretty much done a full restoration on my TD5 Defender so I have had to make some choices on whether to go genuine or Britpart/Bearmach purely based on price and value for money. My thinking here was that the part is really easy to access and fit so the cheaper option makes sense. If it had been a nightmare to fit I would have gone better quality. I know that Hawkeyes and Nanocoms are brilliant, and I totally get that they will pay for themselves, I just couldn't justify the £400ish for either as I wanted to spend most of my budget( what budget!!!!) on parts, so I bought a Pscan which hooks up to my laptop. Its basic but is great for the TD5 and does everything I need, and so I use this to do live monitoring of the Defender. I plug it in every week and that's way I'm checking things like the MAF sensor. If the readings start to drop or I notice a drop in power at least I can assess if the Britpart MAF was worth it or not.
I'm just about to do an alternator fix kit this weekend, and again a dilemma, do I go for a cheap or expensive kit as the alternator was a bit tricky to get off. t least I know how to do it now. Top bolt from the top!!
Sorry about the waffling on!

Hey @stumpyj sorry it’s taken so long to reply - things have been a bit manic and the truck has been at the bottom of my list for a few months.
How did it all go with the alternator change?
