Hi all i am struggling to remove my fan on a 2000 td5 defender so i can get to the belt any help,

You need a viscous spanner 36 mm if I remember but unlike 200 300 tdi it's a right hand thread not left hand But just double check to be sure.
Just done mine. I took the belt off using a 15mm spanner on the belt tensioner and just worked down the back of the fan and out the bottom of engine bay.
Then used a cycle inner tube round the fan pulley for grip and a strap off the chassis, 36mm spanner and a extension pole. Pulled strap tight and with the extra leveridge it just undone. No hitting with a hammer that won't prolong the life of the bearings.
It undoes anti clockwise.

Yeah I did mine with the fan in situ too, bit of a fiddle and a few weeks growing your knuckles back, but it's all do-able.

Just completed, it helped knowing the nut was anti clockwise and it came off a treat , belt was straight forward bit,
