Defender Security

Hi all,

Hopefully about to pick up a new defender (to me) nearly 2 years after the last one was stolen. Obviously i am a bit neurotic about the next one going. It is a Puma TDCI, so my preferred pedal lock (the built in drop down one) is not an option.

Obviously i have had a look and done some research, but I am sure that there is a wealth of experience here. It has the factory alarm and immobiliser on it. I was going to add

Deadlocks on all doors
Some kind of pedal lock
Defender defender tracker

Would you say the pedal lock is better than a steering lock? Is there anything else that would be suitable. Obviously budget is limited - you know what its like when you get a new car - all the extras to pay for, but I do want it to be as secure as possible. Anything else anyone can recommend?

i'm going to buy a wheel clamp when my series is out of secure storage.

Can't hurt to have a wheel clamp too.

Thanks - Could be good for longer term storage. I basically want as much as possible, but no so much i get complacent and don't use it!

good point. well i work 12 hours a day 4 days a week so i only get to drive mine on the days off so a clamp wouldn't put me off too much.

Sort out a pedal lock for sure.

Or wire a fat battery up to the steering wheel

we fit them on lots of farm machinery as all JCB telehandler keys fit all JCB telehandlers, as do John Feere tractors up to latest R series.

wont stop them towing it away but will stop them starting it.

also useful if your battery is buried under a non standard seat arrangement and you need to weld something..

Put some door security on it. Cheapest method is to tap a 5mm ball bearing into the door bolt heads and Nyloc nuts on the rear where possible.
Plus bonnet security, shield to stop cable access under front panel and also under O/S wing where the dummy air vent is.
Disc lock and pedal lock (one that doesn’t allow access to cut the bottom off the pedals) l had a Safe-T-Pedal
Reposition the alarm sounder from behind the N/S headlamp where it can easily be accessed and disabled.
You can buy a cable to relocate it somewhere else.

Great tips thank you. I was going to go for the bonnet cable protection as well. Just getting quotes for the deadlocks on the doors. I was looking at the 'ardcase pedal lock rather than the Safe-T pedal. would this be ok to prevent the pedals being cut?

That "ardcase one looks like it can be defeated by cutting through the pedal stems which are still exposed when the device is fitted. Vehicle can then be driven on the pedal stubs. Take a look at the Adrenalin one which I can personally recommend.
I have posted this a couple of times now, whenever the subject pops up. Although any security device can ultimately be defeated, this one will take some beating. And increase the chance of the scrotes giving up on it.

Fab, that is a good point. How do you find storage of it? Is there a clever solution? The appeal of the other one was that it can be stored easily. But efficacy is the main objective!

As an aside - can i use the original steering wheel if i have a quick release steering boss?

It can be fitted and removed in just a few seconds. To stow it when removed for driving I use a short length of chain around one of the rear seat frames (you could use the tubular bulkhead or the tie-down rings) with the ends of the chain captured in the lock mechanism. Takes a few seconds to stow and would stop it flying around in an accident.

I've fitted the door hinge guards and the bonnet cable guard and when funds allow I will be adding more. The more layers of security you have the better it makes your Defender less attractive to the theiving scum.

That looks like some piece of security the Adrenilne,i personally have a Clutch Claw fitted,along with the silver Autolock Steering wheel cover as well as a alarm,as well as 1 or 2 other things,i`m not about to put.
As above though the more layers of security,it makes it less vulnerable,having said that if they want it,they`ll take it 1 way or another,other than living in your Pride & Joy,there`s not a lot else you can do,A Determined Thief Will Take it......

A full metal Jacket is normally better than a clutch claw. Why do you say the adrenaline is so bad?
To the OP - Disklok and safeTpedal as a minimum! Remember to weld half moon shapes on the back of the disklok to secure it even further and put wheels on full lock against a curb. Here is a 15% off code if you live in the west midlands: wmpolice15 when ordered off disklok website.

Hi Flagshiplandy,I did`nt say the Adrenaline is bad at all,quite the opposite in fact,I said it`s some piece of security the Adenaline,in other words it`s A TOP PIECE OF SECURITY!!! I`d very happily use it myself,i`m sorry if I made it sound as though,I was disparageing towards the Adenaline,but i`ve read & re-read what,I wrote,and it does`nt look (to me anyway)as though i`m dissing it,Lee.....

Thanks for the advice - a few bits ordered already! Deadlocks the most expensive by far, but well worth the deterrent i am sure. Sad that it comes to this.

I recently bought a 2012 110 utility and having heard the horror stories about their vunerability and theft rate I decided to buy some solid metal work as extra security.
After some research I bought the following.

Disklok : This clamps onto the steering wheel completely covering it, seems solid and has decent reviews. You need a large for most Defenders I think. Around £120

Clutch Claw: This is a two piece clamp that locks the clutch and break pedal together with a metal foot that prevents them being pressed down. Seems solid , bit of a pain to use to begin with but it’s worth it. Around £100.

Both would be noisy to remove and would take some time to remove for most thieves I think. Make sure you have GAP insurance if it’s a valuable Landy.

Thanks Simon. Some good advice there. There seems to be some debate as to whether the Medium or large disklok is better 0 what size do you have?
