Defender rear diff clonks?

Hi All,
I have a 110 td5 05 Hicap
massive clonks coming from the rear diff, what will I need a complete new diff?
If so where is the best place to get a good one? any pointers you may think I need to know?

You sure it’s the diff??
Could be the A frame knuckle been worn

I have checked the A-frame, looks pretty tight, typically let the clutch up and an almighty bang and if parked on a hill it locks up

I would Check the drive flanges first before pulling the diff apart. They wear down and get a lot of play. They are also cheap And easy to change. You may find that you just have a little
Slack in everything rather than a catastrophic diff failure.

Do you mean when " it locks up " will the vehicle not move at all?
Also check if a UJ has broken or is seized.

Yes it locks up,take the hand brake off and out of gear and it sits there until you put it in gear and let the clutch up
then bang! and its free

check drive flanges and half shaft splines both ends but more than likely wheel end ,check prop ujs, if diff may just need adjusting back lash but while your in the diff you will be able to check condition of teeth also could be a brake sticking on

If its the flanges I have a spare set of HD ones also got a full set of shafts & a spare 24 spline diff.

Yes I think it may well be the flanges more I think about it,I did the fronts a while back
but not the rear, must of done 90k with them since I have owned it

Don't rule out the possibility that the hand brake drum is jamming on.

If you take the handbrake off does the motor move ? (Before you let the clutch off)

does it make this noise if you are parked on flat/level ground after the handbrake has been applied?

Only sometimes,never locks up on the flat, but huge clocks when changing gear or pulling away

It does sound as if the hand brake is holding on some. What happens is as you move along no clonk but as soon as clutch goes in the drag of the hand brake is enough to put pressure on the drive train and take up the usual slack in an instant hence the clonk. When starting off its the other way, hand brake still holding some and suddenly let's go.
A hot drum after driving a symptom. A good clean out and new expander and shoes/springs will sort.
