Assuming your not being pedantic about the name "Defender" they can be anything from brand new to 25 years old, come with a choice of around 10 engines, 3 wheelbases, and countless body styles, so you need to limit your choices a bit.

Ideally and stereotypically most people tend to be looking for a solid, diesel engined comfortable defender like a 200 tdi or 300 tdi county. Expect to be paying about £2500 to £4000 for something decent, sometimes considerably less but you have to be in the right place at the right time and very lucky!

i managed to pick up a 110 with a 200tdi and a r380 short shift that requires less work than what i am gonna actually do for 460 quid. 200 quid ontop and some labour would see it a usable workhorse.

I agree with POS, for your neck of the woods around the upper figure but don't be afraid to haggle. I got £1500 off mine from a dealer, it just goes to show how greedy some buggers are. Go for something that hasn't been tarted up too as you'll get the "warts and all" view on it and you'll be able to judge the overall condition better.
