Not sure where you're based but why dont you head over to the 4x4 show in a couple of weekends time. Might give you a chance to see the options up close.

I dont really know anything about Landcruisers, so cant really help with your comparision.
I would say though that Defenders aren't quick, normal motorway speeds is flat out for my 90 (quite comfy at 60-65 though). Also, I would say its juicy in comparision to a normal car (but no idea about the mpg of the landcruiser, so can't help compare there).
But its fecking brilliant in all other respects. It has been amazingly reliable, even through that harsh winter we just had. It has no problems whatsoever with driving through deep water or rough terrain or snow. I love driving it. And I probably spend quite a lot of my time thinking about what modifications I want to make next or what accessories I want to buy for it (because the options are endless). It really is the ultimate vehicle in most respects.
As others have said, you do need to give them a little bit of TLC. People do seem to neglect them quite a lot, it seems. I think that's because they are so rugged and reliable in general, that people tend to think they can just leave them and not look after them in the same way you'd need to look after a car. But that said, even if you do get one that's not been looked after, they are really simple vehicles and easy to work on. Parts are cheap and readily available. Most jobs I'd gladly do myself, rather than take to a garage.
Yeah, I'd pick the defender I think.
