Hi all and compliments of the season!

My wife and I recently moved to a small village in the wop-wops where a handful of gently inclined slopes rendered both my cars pretty paperweights (and pavement decorations) with the recent light snow in the Midlands.

I had to call the chap I buy wood from, who was good enough to rescue us (for a few pints) who was also good enough to tell me that the village is regularly completely isolated each winter. So much so it's protocol to get to know a farmer who can be relied on to bring essentials by tractor. That or buy a Land Rover.

Nice as the locals are, I prefer option 2, hence my arrival here.

I'm an experienced driver, have owned a freelander, a Nissan patrol and various sedans in the past, but I figure if I'm going to go 4x4 I may as well go deep.

I would like to request a method of contacting a senior member (perhaps?) or invite everyone to share their insights. The short version is I need a defender. The 110 is nice but not essential, my wife and I have yet to breed. I am happy to spend anything from £5,000-£15,000 and need advice on what I'm actually getting for each?

Given the nature of the defender, it needs to arrive working, though I am happy to work on it on weekends to improve it.

I'm hearing conflicting opinion on the 2.2/2.4 'Puma', the 6 speed box, the expense of the 'XS', and maybe buying an older one and upgrading or just buying a neat one on day one?

Your strong, insightful opinion is welcome here. I look forward to getting some advice.

HP.
