Hello,
My Defender 300 TDI heater blower has blown!

I have removed the unit and looking for replacements I see that about £70 gets one suitable for Defender models up to LA939975, models after that need one costing about £110. Does anyone know what the difference is? (please don't say £40)

I could buy a used complete heater assemby unit from a 200TDI for about £40 but would that fit a 1995 300TDI? The units look similar but maybe there are subtle differences, especially as the blower is apparently different.

I've just spent about £1000 on the Defender on various items for the MOT including a new rear cross member and the wallet is looking a bit sparse so any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks for any help or advice.

Honest advice - Buy a nice warm hat and jacket! My Landrover 90 has fully working heaters etc and blows well - on a cold day they are USELESS!! if mine packed up i prob would just put another T-Shirt on under my jacket. I went out in it when it wasnt even that cold but cold enough to wear a jacket and the thing gave more heat from the engine then the heater.

So i would look at may getting something from a scrappy! Or look at a parts book that is a STICKY on the defender thread that way you can see the difference and if it will fit! The other idea is a heater that plugs into the Cig lighter

Thanks for those ideas but I really want to get the heater back working.
I use it mostly for the demisting function although that may not be quite such a problem now that I've cleared the blocked drain plug which meant the blower was operating under water. So still hoping someone knows the answers I asked for.

I think they all use the same basic big box and controls, the early matrix comes with intake pipes that angle down whereas the later (more efficient?) one's come horizontally straight out. They should both fit.

Gentlemen,thanks for the advice.

For future reference:
I bought a second hand complete heater unit from a 1992 defender 200TDI. I compared it with my unit before purchase and found that almost everything looked the same, straight pipes, same number on the motor, etc. The only difference was the type of three pin plug. So I brought it home and just swapped the motor, which had the same 2pin plug as mine.
I remain mystified as to the reason for the alleged difference between pre and post 1994 units.
On the good side I now have a spare box with an excellent looking clean heat exchanger.

make sure you have a good gasket between the heater unit and bulkhead , and that you set up the flap controls properly , as it makes a world of difference .
