Defender Heater Blowing Hot & Cold

I hadn't used the 1994 110csw for a while so in we all got(Me, Mrs & 3 kids) and off we went. Travelled about 30m and the heater went cold then temp gauge up. No water in engine I thought but it was ok. Then temp went down to norm and heater cold then hot and so on. All answers welcome.

after checking thermostat -next headgasket

Hope it's the thermostat as she only had new head gasket last Jan.
