I acquired a 1994 Defender 90 300tdi 2 1/2 years ago and have been gradually tinkering, tweaking and maintaining it ever since. I have now taken it into the garage where I have a shiny new galvanised chassis waiting. I have dismantled the interior, removed the roof, rear sides, seat box and have set about taking the wings off. I am approaching the point where the engine will need to come out (engine crane standing by) and what I am hoping for assistance with is what to do with it once out. I don't want to just drop it on the floor, and so looking for advice on how to put it down on something movable in a position which I can do any jobs required while out.

They have multi adjustable bits of steel with holes in that you line up with the Bell housing bolt holes.
I think there crap tbh.

OK, I ordered the above engine stand and after 5 failed attempts the courier found our house today. Does anyone know the best part of the engine or bell housing to attach the stand to, and what bolt size and thread I need to attach to the engine? If possible I'd like to crane off and attach to the stand in one rather than leave it hanging for a few days while I work out what bolts I need and where to get them.

On my 300tdi engine (old) it's about 14 of m10 bolts. 1.5mm thread pitch.

I have borrowed a draper engine stand/trolly off a mate, and it required some 100mm long bolts (4 inch), and some penny washers.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I now have some long m10 bolts at the ready. I decided to lift the gearbox out first which was fun as the engine decided it wanted to nose dive. After putting an axle stand under the front of the sump I managed to get the gearbox off. I then took the clutch and flywheel off and am now trying to work out if the oil in the bell housing is from the rear crank seal or not! The crank seal housing is clean which makes me wonder. Will change it anyway but concerned the oil could be coming from elsewhere.....

I had an engine half hanging from the rafters and half sitting on an old tyre for the best part of a year so strictly speaking engine stands aren't required. Bloomin handy for working at it tho.

Just a comment, it seems to have quite a bit of weight hanging on the bolts, would it be an idea to get some of the parts off i.e. engine mounts alternator etc.
