Hello, I know this has roughly been covered before, but does anyone know a good bike rack for a Defender? I dont have a spare wheel carrier, nor do I intend to get one at the moment. I do have a roof rack which I am currently using to put my bikes on, but its very time consuming and often awkward lowering heavy (and often muddy :D ) mountain bikes off the roof - its a long way down :D. Had a quick look on amazon, but I dont think the back door of my Defender closes tight enough to hold one of those straps in lol. So any ideas would be smashing. Cheers.

If you've got a towball you could get a cheap one off amazon. I got one that was only about twenty quid and holds two bikes. It's had loads of great reviews which is why I bought it but in my opinion it doesn't feel very sturdy. I haven't used it proper yet but I'm sure with a few bungees the bikes would be secure. It's made by streetwize if I recall correctly

Usually no but there are ones for 4x4. It has a double kink in the upright to go round it but if the tyre is bigger than standard wont fit. I just take the spare off when I use it. Simples

right, its a 31" tyre, so probs wont fit - I do like to have a spare tyre on me though, even though with a all terrain they are less likely to puncture - if you know any tow ball mounted ones that are 4x4's, gimme a link :) I'll take a look now. Thanks

Or you could get one of those mounts that goes behind the tow ball and get a local fabricator to make something that fits around the spare wheel and maybe uses a ratchet strap or similar to secure to your spare wheel.

That's exactly what mine does. It was designed for a freelander but not designed to fit round a 265. There is one by Thule that sits like those you see on the back of a vw transporter
