Defender Arm Rest

I am about to re cover my door cards on my defender as they are a bit tatty and its cheaper to re cover then to buy new ones. Obviously being a defender its easier to drive with the window down but with this being Yorkshire its not always practical. I find the door top to be a bit thin for resting my arm on with the window up and as I am about to recover wondered if I could cobble something together to rest my arm on that would then be recovered and blended in with the door. A bit of a wider, comfy ledge for my right elbow. Has anyone done anything similar or am I the only wuss on here?

forget the recover, use some chequer plate and weld on some box section.. job done
