I remember a fault like this on a 1989 Range Rover Classic. In the end the fault was with one of the diodes in the rectifier of the alternator. At the time, I couldn't find the componant, so it was a replacement alternator.

Suggest you find the make and model of the alternator and google it for diode faults to confirm, else swap it out - I would give it 90% probability it is a non-repairable fault.

Good luck.

Just a thought, have you checked for charging, measure the volts engine off, measure with engine on, should be higher.

If you do not have a multi meter, switch the lights on with engine off, then on with engine on, should be brighter - don't turn over the engine with the lights on if you have a halogen conversion.

Hope I am not patronising you, just trying to help.
