Defender 90 Heater

Okay so in my defender 1995 90 the heaters are useless i know that is a standard! but i only have one setting on the blower nothing comes out on any of the other lever positions even the bottom one, only the middle one works... is this a norm or has something broke? many thanks!

Summats broke. Left hand lever left of dash should have 3 settings.

Or get some heated seats in

They're ok when cleaned out and set up properly.

NO they're NOT, not if they are set up proper.
Strip it, clean the matrix, seal the gaps so the hot air goes to the cab & NOT the engine bay, make sure the control cables are setup right & they are proper TOASTY

As has been said you should have three positions.

and the matrix either needs flushing out or there's not enough coolant in the system

I have to put my heater on to middle setting after 15 minutes or I need to open a vent/window.

As long as it's not much below zero I have been known to leave it on full blast and have the window wide open so I dont bang my elbow

Agree with all of this heater in mine is toasty even though drivers door has bent frame annd leaks cold air. My mates 200Tdi is fine and warm too we both got new matrix abot 100 000 mls and serviced up the heaters and linkages as described above

What engine is it? My td engine used to take a while before heat came out. With the tdi engine (same heater as before) warms up a lot quicker

Flippin' heck, if I drive to work with the heater on full tilt I end up with athletes foot the next day. I've got an '88 defender and the heater is one of the best things on it, definitely some thing wrong somewhere.

If there is only one speed on the fan, is it the resistor pack for the power feed to the heater that needs replacing?

Defender 300tdi! will give the matrix a thorough cleaning this weekend thanks for the replies guys!

I use to thin they were rubbish but I cleaned mine, adjusted the cables and now after 15 minutes the Cab is roasting, I drove over 100 miles today in just a t shirt
