Hi Guys, Just completed a 2 inch lift On my defender 90. prior to lift I would get a good clunk at the rear as the drive chain was engaged. I completed the lift and it got worse. I also got a noisey rattle from drive trainbut only when easing back off the throttle. Checked both Propshafts and found one of the UJ's on the rear prop was done, so replaced that and clunk gone. But the rattle is still there but not as bad. Any ideas?? I am not mechanical but becomming so rapidly:D

Hi Dave, I notice it when mostly in 4th and fith when I come of the throttle but dont put the clutch pedal down, sort of engine breaking realy. most noisey in 4th and 5th when slowing up on the M4 for those annoying speed restrictions at rush hour.

Check the transfer box flanges, bearings can wear and sound like a rattle. Could also be a noisy diff on overrun. Where abouts it the noise comming from?

May sound odd but I had a rattle/noise and sounded like transmission, after changing diffs, gearbox and transferbox it just turned out to be the rear track rod/ steering arm sat on the diff plate and it rattled when taking up power and then on overrun, i must of bent it offroad.

Thanks Maximan, I will check that out. I like the thought of it being something cheap like that. Like I said to DaveM-sport I hear it when my foot comes off the gas but it stops when I depress the clutch. It sounds like it's coming through the transmission tunnel, but I can't be sure. I can get every gear easily with problems and low high range is fine as well. Can't here when she is idling on the driveway. Cheers

Sounds like main gearbox is fine so as usually 4th gear is quiet no matter how bad the gearbox gets.

As said, check the simple stuff first, transfer box flanges, handbrake shoe and drum and check the front prop.

Yeah I had a look at the front prop and that seems to be fine. Gonna check the simple stuff this weekend and make sure its not that before it all goes wrong and gets expensive. Cheers

I had a rattle that i spent ages trying to locate and it turned out to be the handle if my Hi Lift jack, which goes in a mounting on the spare wheel carrier. If I travel without the jack, things are a lot quieter.
