Im looking at getting a 1986-1990 defender 90/110 4C 2.5TD because there alot cheaper on the insurance than a 200tdi, seeing as it will be my first car!

Is there anything i should be aware of? any reasons i shouldnt get one? and what sort of price would a good one be?:confused:

Looking for some help on this, if anyone has any good information, that would be great!:crazy_driver:

dont think it will be vastly cheaper but you would be far far better getting an NA diesel, the chance of getting a good TD is like trying to herd cats, the 19J engine is awful and you only need to search the forum to come up with a list as long as your arm...

An NA may be slower but would imagine cheaper to insure and far more reliable and bullet proof.... Ive had 2 x TD's and swopped them for 200 TDi's as soon as funds allowed

Cheers Steve

Paid £1350 for a 1988 19J with 87,000 miles. With no dents and been stored in a barn owned by a farmer as a third vechice just for snow and when his car broke down or getting serviced,
It has never really been tax&tested noughty farmer!!

Mine is a 1990 200tdi 110 sv with 2" lift and genuine snorkle full galv roof rack and ladder and I paid 1600 its just had replaced; 2 outriggers, steering box, and loads of other bits and bobs so should be tidy for a while yet.

They are out there you just have to go the extra mile to find the right one and not just search fleebay.

Good luck hunting one down :)

Quick question, have you driven one? only reason i ask is most people choose a mini or something similar for their first car, defenders dont drive like newer cars!

Ha i havent no :/ havent had the chance but i have driven a 6x6 3.9 V8 range rover (and yes a 6x6 not a 6x4!) and a old 200tdi discovery and that was clunky and beautiful! :lvheart-119:

and ive driven a few new range rovers and freelanders

I paid £2500 for my 1988 petrol, now converted to a disco 200tdi by me, payed a bit over the odds I know but fell in love wi it n bought it, never looked back!

Insurance wise 1600 with the 200 in for my first car so that's not bad :)

I paid £1450 for a 85 petrol but with a sound chassis, for me the engine didnt matter coz I will change it soon, I just wanted it to be tax exempt over here or I would of had another disco
