Hi Everyone,

I've a 1992 200tdi defender and currently experiencing some wiring issue

1. When indicating right and braking, the indicators flash fast and the trailer warning comes on on dash. When not braking / indicating left this isn't a problem. So far I've replaced the indicator relay, changed the trailer plug as it was rusty and checked the earth at the back. I've also tried earthing the rear right indicator directly to the battery with no ava

2. Fuse 1 (flash beam, clock, interior light, horn) keeps blowing. Sometimes as you drive down the road, sometimes when u just switch on, can't find any pattered to it. Tried the obvious things like looking for damaged wires in the front wings, and tried fitting and smaller fuse and playing with these wires to try get it to blow but no luc

3. Radio, cigarette lighter an other dash bits turn off the Odd time - think this is related to the earth on the bulkhead and might have this sorted, but was looking to see if anyone had this problem before

Has anyone seen any of the above issues before, any help would be greatly appreciate

Thanks in advance

If you remove the fuse that keeps blowing, and get a headlamp bulb with two wires on it down to two cut down spade terminals inserted in the fuse slots, everything will still work as intended as the current will flow through the bulb filament, but when the dead short occurs the bulb will light up, then with bulb alight you can start wiggling wires etc to narrow it down.

I’ve got a 91 TDI and have experienced similar issues. Take the rear interior light covers off and check for breaks in the wires iirc there is an earth attached to the body.
WRT to flasher etc, this could be the stalk causing the issue as the weak metal in the mechanism fails. Similar happened to me the night before an MOT.
Your final issue is clearly behind the dash. Just take your time to remove the brittle plastics and chase all the wires. No doubt there’ll be blown illumination bulbs requiring change and evidence of previous owner antics :D
