I have a 1993 Defender 90 with a 200tdi. It is in really good health and is pretty standard apart from a boost pin, ring and an EGT gauge. Im thinking of getting another turbo to increase the power and get a nice turbo whistle. What are people going with? Hybrid or a VNT/VGT turbo? Does anyone have any experience with doing this sort of thing and if so what turbo did you decide to go for and why?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I think this was kind of done to death ages ago, and tbh I have not seen any fresh posts on it for an absolute age.
There are some real good threads where people have made their own manifolds, adapated various vgt to fit/work, but all seemed to be permanently work in progress.
I think the biggest issue with so called performance turbo, is it only works well at certain rpms, ie high speed.
The issues with the vgt seemd to be controlling it, you need a pressure/vac operated one, and many are eletrically controlled for accuracy, and I think this is wjhere the issues lie.

I think Allard ueed to do a 200 vgt kit, as did someone else, both very pricey 1.5k rings a bell?

Rob, I've recently had my std 200tdi turbo rebuilt by Turbo Dynamics; they've done a first rate job on the rebuild. They do promote sportier turbos, you may like to talk with them [Ollie]

eta: your exhaust system is as important as any uprated turbo and the two should be considered as a 'combined package' :. a free'r flowing exhaust is a must for a higher spec turbo or there'll be too much back pressure/exhaust gas resistance to benefit from increased turbo performance.

I'm not saying you can't get gains here. But the bang per buck ratio is unlikely to be very good. You could spend a fortune and I'm uncertain how much real world increase in power you'll get.

We had a dyno day last year, lots of Tdi's running in various states of tune. Ignore the numbers to some extent, as different dyno's will give different numbers. But do note how they compare to each other in this table.

I have a hybrid turbo with turbosmart actuator running 1.5 bar on my defender 200tdi, along with an Alisport intercooler with rebuilt modded fuel pump and new injectors. Prior to this I could only get 55mph on long hills with 37” tyres,
Since then it will do 85mph on the same hill.
Don’t know about power output but it’s definitely better than standard.

I was always under the impression the vnt/vgt was to improve low down pulling power, so you no longer got that annoying flat arear under 1800rpm?
