I was hoping somebody could help me diagnose a strange engine noise that started occurring after a day of very wet off roading. It sounds like a mechanical whine and only happens when I accelerate. If the engine is running idle it sounds fine but when I accelerate the whining starts and doesn't go away until I stop accelerating. The engine was submerged in water so I jet washed it to get rid of the mud and then used plenty of WD40 around the pulleys and belts but no luck. I've recorded a short video so you can hear it:

Any ideas?

Sounds like a bearing has had its grease cleaned out, or failed.

Hi, did you ever get to the bottom of what was causing this. Mine is doing something similar I think
Hello, my 2012 2.4 is making the same noise, its been said at the local garage to be the turbo but it has no warning lights, no lack of power or smoking bad. I've taken the inlet manifold of the turbo but there's no movement in the turbine itself which runs smoothly. I've replaced idler pully as it had a little wear. Doesn't sound like escaped gas from outlet or wheezing from air inlet?. Could it be another bearing perhaps. Many thanks.
