That's it found one job that's beaten me. ....starter motor needs replacing just clicks hit it with hammer and it started. ... Ordered one off eBay thought I'd spend today changing it a few wires and 2 bolts shouldn't take long.... Well started at 9am by 4:30pm threw the towel in. Who ------- designed the range rover with a starter motor you can't get at. Took wheel off took wheel liner out can't get in that way heat shield in the way. Got various extension bars had someone helping all afternoon trying to manage the socket end whilst I was in the turning end by oil filter no joy. Off to mates garage over Easter where he has a ramp and every took known to mechanics. Oh we'll at least I can say I tried. ...

Been there, done that. I had to drop the transmission down slightly and get over the top of it with a very long handle to get at the damn nuts. Damn thing took me ages even then. I guess they hoped it would never need replacing!

I assume you're referring to the V8?

It's even worse when some numpty in the past has stripped the threads in the bellhousing and used a nut to hold the allen bolt at the top...

You try getting a spanner up there to hold the nut! Luckily I'm now an expert having had to change it 3 times in the last year.

It is a horrible job though. RAVE has a picture of the required socket extension routing although it's not very clear and takes a lot of trial and error.

The first time is always a pain but afterwards it's a matter of feeling the allen key into the bolt head. Don't touch the bottom bolt until you have the top one out. It's a temptation to remove the easy one first but if you do, the weight of the motor hangs on the top bolt and makes it difficult to undo. If the bottom bolt is left just barely nipped up, the top bolt can usually be spun out with the fingers after the initial loosening. When refitting, just tighten the bottom bolt first with the fingers and then fit and tighten the top one fully before tightening the bottom fully.
For the uninitiated, the allen key size is 6mm and I use a 1/2" sq. drive socket with the allen key fitted.

Havnt attempted the bottom one as I thought exactly what you said it would hinder removal of top one. Cannot get to top one with fingers as heat shield in the way

This is where torches, mirrors and long extensions come into play. It also helps if you have three arms and two dislocated wrists. :D:D:D

Irishrover took your advice and bought a 6mm Allen socket for 3/8 drive as I hadn't had much luck with 1/2 drive. However it was too small my Allen bolts required 8mm Allen socket so had to go back to 1/2 and try again. Couldn't crack open the bolt so took half the trolley jack handle to make extension t give a bit of leverage and hey presto result....I now have successfully changed the starter motor and car now starts again a
On the key ...thanks guys
