Def90 Td5 LHD Clutch renewal

I have just taken custody of a 2002 Defender 90 Td5 LHD with 100,000 km on it. Nasty squealing noises and vibes in the clutch pedal suggest a failing clutch release bearing. Difficulty to engage gears R and 1 to 3.

My question is: Is it better / easier to remove the engine or the gearboxes to change the clutch?

RAVE says take out the gearboxes, but I'm seriously leaning towards the engine out route.
The last time I did a clutch was on a V8 Disco and we decided to take the transmission out, but have since found that the book says take the engine out.

I don't have a ramp or lift, but do have an overhead beam and chain lifting block.

Also, replace the dual mass flywheel? With another one, or a solid? Car is not used for any serious offroading.

I intend to fit a new clutch plate, cover, arm and bearing. Anything else?

Any thoughts from the green oval oracle?

i looked into this as my td5 has the squeel.....

as my workshop at work wouldnt do it -they'd need to have it on the ramp overnight and the boss wouldnt let them- i spent a day on the phone.

here's all iv learned so far;

Apparently this can be done with engine in and its better to drop the gearbox.

Stay away from britpart clutches

there is no such thing as a heavy duty clutch for the td5.

dualmass is a great idea + is an amazing piece of engineering -it reduces the vibration and shunt on the engine/gearbox but for some reason most of the td5's are a ticking time bomb -not a case of if its gonna go but when.

when replacing, new plates and flywheel are a must.

try a 5 piece set like this;

interestingly enough, my local main dealer quoted me the same as the lowest independant quote i got (both using the kit above!) £600 all in.

I've done the job now.
There was some other stuff to do on the engine (alternator and glow plugs) So I took the engine out. Much easier than the gearboxes I reckon, but I do hate lying on the floor and balancing heavy gearboxes on jacks.
The dual mass flywheel was knackered. I replaced that with a new one (new part number has superceded the original, so it may be modified). New clutch plates, as the release springs were badly worn on the bearing face. New release bearing and spigot bush. Not a bad job. Nice smooth noiseless gearchanges now.
It's easier to get the lump out of a Defender as the whole grille comes off, so maybe the gearbox route would be better in a Disco2.
