Decrypting part numbers.

I popped into the local Landrover (on my way back from the engineers to
drop off my manifold to be re drilled tapped and threaded 101 manifold
....Grrr!!! ) main dealers today on the off chance they may have some
manifold bolts (downpipe to manifold - 101 stylie). Equiped with my 101
parts manual part number we soon learned it was of little use to the
catalogues they used.

Eventually the very helpful chap came up with a part number for the bolt 3/8
UNC 1 1/2" incase I managed to get it at another Rover dealers. He went on
to explain various elements of the part number... for instance 5 reflected
UNC... then another number reflected the length of the bolt.

To say I was stunned that Landrover had actually applied some logic to some
part numbers was an understatement.

Ended up at the local nut and bolt specialists.
Could anyone in the know give any more insight into decrypting numbers?

There's a table on ep90.com (http://www.ep90.com/index.php?id=28), much
cheaper to go to your local fastener specialist than buy them from a LR
dealer!

Yes agreed on the specialists, I was only passing as I'd just deposited the
manifold at the engineers down the road so though it may work out cheaper
than running around the city. As it happend ended up at the specialist who
gave me two bolts, not worth booking as he said Just a shame they don't
do 101 manifolds.. I only need 1 of them ;-)

I note they have the 1L as unknown. Chap here said the "L" just meant
landrover so if I were to go to Rover just drop the "L". About the only bit
I remember.
