At the weekend I experianced a slight problem with my Discovery (89' carb V8)
Engine coughed, splutterd and backfired/misfired when accelerating from 2000rpm with slight load appllied, was more noticable when electrical load was also applied. (alternator?)

Then the engine died and would not restart, battery ran flat. Jump-started, ran o.k at low rpm. (checked volts to batt. 14.3v) However sypmtoms still remain. Got it home now doesn't want to know!

Initial thoughts weak spark, so I replaced the coil, still nothing!
Have used spark tester on plugs= have spark, fuel/air o.k!

Put timing light on HT lead 1 - strobe appeared to be slow!

Anybody any ideas!!!!

ignition module possibly and charging issue where about's in somerset

it sounds similar to my problems and i replaced coil, leads, dizzy cap, ignition modual which i found out later is an upgrade they say, that doesnt work. changed the fuel filter on the chassis. in the end i nearly gave up but last chance and it turned out to be the fuel pump and filter were completly clogged with **** so got a new one from famous 4 parts 39.99 and it runs better than ever. just have a look at ur fuel system

I would say fuel pump. Pull hose off carb. Put end in bottle. Turn ignition so electrics come on. Loads of fuel should fill the bottle quite fast. If not check pump is running (feels like its ticking) and that little fuel filters dont have water in.

Check dizzy hasnt been rotated. Tighten its mounting bolt on chassis. If you can twist it then your timing is probably out.

Change condensor and check points not dirty. Clean contacts and see if rotor arm is worn.

Check choke isn't fully open!!! They get stuck if you pull them too hard on cold starts.
