P38A Dash swapped out, wobbly seat and more

Long time no posts.
My 1996 436 HSE has had a knackered dash for a long time. Various issues are (ere) as follows:
  • South African heat and the sun seemed to warp the pad in early life, particularly around-the-clock binnacle and the demist vents under the windscreen.
  • The pad was damaged by some moron slingshotting or catapulting a rock the size of walnut through the rear window, which then bounced off the inside of the windscreen and directly down creating a creator in the pad.
  • Various attempts to fix leaks from the 2 xO rings and pipes which at some point resulted in holes in the plastic.
  • Cut/sawn ducting that had been removed (and duck taped back together) to do repairs to the heater core and blend motors.
All in all, a bit of a mess.

My sons and I found a P38 at local breakers with an immaculate dash which we paid £40 for, Seemed a bargain.
It took 3-4 hours to remove it including the entire frame, heater matrix, motors, blower motors, and all the ducting. Now we have a pile of spares.

Once home we needed to do the same all over again, but a little more carefully. Two or three days later (and some trim upgrades) and it looks fantastic again. We have a little more to do and then it's complete.

Had the front seats out to get better access, plus the driver seat also needed a little repair as it was rocking a bit caused by disintegrated plastic spacers near the little worm gear drive units. Improvised new ones and all seems well.

Now to move on to other work prior to the MOT like a degrease and wash down of the block where it's been weeping a few years.

Planning to strip old paint off the rocker covers and repaint the original black. New stuff to fit:
  • Valley etc, and rocker gaskets
  • Breathers
  • Steering damper
  • Steering rods
  • Drop links
Fingers crossed for a dry day soon. then an update.

Sorry, should have included pics. but it would be of the knackered dash, no dash at all then new dash.
Still may do that.

I did manage to thoroughly clean under the bonnet as in under the air box, EAS box, fuse box etc..... Nice and shiny now

I Will post some of the other repairs later.
It's Mark's thing,he feels isolated over the Channel,any photos will do I've sent him one of my sister who's a nun and another of a ham sandwich.keeps him happy,Bless.;):D
