Dash Cams

Never bought one of these before but seen (I think) a good offer for this one on the Craddocks newsletter yesterday:

I'm planning on some off-road stuff so I want it to record in relatively good quality, anyone else have one?

i got mine from halfords, a lot cheaper than the 1 you have found.

Try amazon, you can get some good cams from there, some with 2 cameras so you can record out the back window too.

Take a look at the link above, it gives a fairly good over view of most of the Dash cams. Also shows some footage of both day and night driving with them. Prices can range from £30 to a couple of hundred depending on what you want from a dash cam. I bought a cheap one for about £25 which does the job. Took it to Morocco. The footage you see from a Green bonnet Defender is mine. That was taken with a £25 dashcam. I bought this one thinking it would probably get nicked before I got back anyway. If I was doing it again I would probably go for something like
Transcend DrivePro 200
Amazon product
or the newer one the 220. Check out what mounting suits you best and if you are going to use it between a couple of cars. Some mountings are only for one car. ( stick on to the wind screen)

I have nextbase 402g's front and rear may give a bit too much info as it records your speed, position and everything

also bought a cheap £32 front and rear one for the s3 does the job without all the extra info

We have one in the Discovery, useful for reviewing routes you've driven or the occasional incident. It's a Mini0801.

Not sure I would really want a dashcam monitoring my every move during day to day motoring but I can obviously see the benefits if you are on a overland trip etc or involved in a bump.
I really think that within a few years we will all have the insurance 'black' boxes thrust upon us if we are to get anything like a good deal on motor insurance. What a load of ****e, and does anyone actually compete with their family on how good a driver they are using the phone app as the Aviva ad ?

No - I think most of the thinking public see these Apps and black boxes for the gross intrusion that they are. I too suspect they will be 'mandated' in our own interests of course over a fairly short period.

Dash cams (with movement triggers and incident loops) voluntarily fitted seem to have many good uses - apart from the plonkers who keep/upload footage of themselves doing amazingly stupid stuff.......doh!! Cheers, A

auto makers have computers in cars they make. and those computers can be accessed when involved in a accident, to see just how fast car was going or if there was a malfunction of sort causing a accident. The manufactures have covered there arse's, from people and lawyers saying it was equipment failure. And the cops can acess them to see just how fast you were driving.
But really with all the CCTV in the uk, would that really be a concern

Does an app such as the Aviva take into account people who do not indicate, forget to switch lights on at night or bad weather or sit in the middle lane on motorways? If not I can see little point in them as a marker of a good driver.
