I drove a D3 at the weekend and whilst it was better than my D2 in so many ways, the most disappointing thing I noticed on returning to the D2 was the vagueness of the steering in comparison.
I know the steering box is an older tech system but can it be improved?

Is it sloppy or just no feedback?

May be worth jacking the front end up and checking the steering UJs, bushes etc. Also maybe the steering box could be tightened up.

Cheers

I wouldn't go as far as sloppy but thinking about it there is a small amount of steering wheel movement before the wheels turn, always been there and has passed 3 MOT's in my ownership.

I think it's just a characteristic of the steering box, and possibly the chassis too (the D3 is a monocoque isn't it?).
I felt a little out of control when we got our first D2, until I got used to it - it seems more like you guide a Landy, rather than steer it! And our newer D2 feels the same - and a little stiffer, I think due to the wider tyres. Our Clio is way sharper, and the steering on my MGB is like a kart compared to the D2!

Panhard Rod bushes can have a disproportionate effect on the steering when they get slack.

My own D2 feels 'normal', our Astra Mk5 and Renault Trafic all feel different but I wouldn't say the D2 was too bad.

It is nothing seriously amiss but especially when towing I feel a bit disconnected from the front wheels.
Thanks chaps. I'll get my garage to check it all over next time it's with them.

I have a similar sort of sensation towing, was wondering myself. Was going to get under and check things out.

Almost feels to drift ever so slightly towing and needs correcting.

Also my steering wheel is slightly off centre when driving in a straight line.
