D2 noise when cornering old chestnut

Hi all

I have seen discussions about this before, but never seen anyone post a follow up of the final resolution. My 2004 D2 makes a sort of rumbling "woo woo woo" type noise when cornering to the right. It is only noticeable at speed (over 40mph) and not at town/crawling speed. It occurs, even when going round the slightest bend. The noise seems to be coming from the front RHS of the vehicle and can be felt through the pedals & steering wheel. In a straight line it is smooth as a baby's botty. When cornering left, the noise occurs very slightly.

I suspect a front hub bearing, but a friend (Honda mechanic) reckons a drive shaft C/V joint. I would have expected noise at any speed in this case. Somebody else has suggested the tyres. They are approx. 50% worn and are General Grabbers all round. Wear looks to be even on all tyres.

I'm up for changing the front hubs but have a couple of hang ups:

1) Why is the noise coming from the RHS of the car when cornering right? Wouldn't it be normal for the LHS bearing to take the sideways force of cornering right?

Did I ought to change both hubs to be safe?

2) If I do shell out for 2 new hubs, I'm gonna be pretty cross if it turns out they are not the problem.

The wife and me plan to drive to Shetland and back from Lincolnshire in August and I would like to have this sorted before we go.

Has anybody else had this and got to the bottom of it?

Interesting you have the grabbers, I get something similar on same tyre but in my case most noticeable when the disco pitches over bumps on the straight.

In your case could be roll in corners, and in both cases the woo woo noise is just the load on the tyre cycling at some fractional hertz

I'm also sure the transmission somehow amplifies the noise

Thanks for the reply Joojar. Thinking about what you said, the tyres were virtually new when I got the Disco last year and the noise has developed over time. I'm thinking, perhaps it wouldn't hurt or cost anything to swap the front tyres for the rears (the rears are less worn than the fronts) and see if there is any change or improvement in noise. :scratching_chin:
 
I had trouble with noise and slight vibration on cornering with a set of general grabbers, changed the tyres for pirrelli scorpions .............. no more noise or vibration, I would never again buy GG.
I would not of thought it was tyres except a friend told me of his brother having the same problem and he spent a fortune trying to cure it and only found it when he changed the tyres for an mot.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. Ive just finished a set of nights (yawn :p) so got a few days off to have a play. I'll report back if I get anywhere.
 
Update on the noise when cornering issue:

It did turn out to be the near side front wheel bearing after all. Took the truck to my local LR indy, and took one of the mechanics out for a spin and a listen. He was confident it was the bearing and he was right.

I would like to have tackled this job myself, but I think that sometimes it's wise to recognise when you don't reeeeeeeally know what you are doing :confused: and let somebody who does :rolleyes: loose on safety critical bits. He fitted a Timken hub/bearing assembly and charged me £75 for labour - which I didn't think was bad, considering the possible pit falls of this job that a chancer (electrician with a mechanics tool kit) like me could have fallen foul of. For now, I'll stick to fiddling with the bits that won't kill people if I f...k it up :cool:.

Result - the truck is transformed. Lovely, quiet & smooth like it should be. Feels taughter on the road too.

Have to say - very impressed with my local LR indy (Binbrook Motors in Lincolnshire) and would recommend them. :)
