d1 rear quarter protection

I'm currently rebuilding the D1 rear and was sure someone mentioned there should be a guard in place between the outer panel and arch to stop water and mud going up into inner rear quarters? This would protect against chipping of my new inners too. Can any gurus confirm please?

Theres kind of a rubber strip which presses against the alluminium skin, but is not attatched to it.

I wanted to replace mine, but couldnt find the part on any diagrams. I ended up pulling it off another breaker disco.

The whole rear quarter on the disco is, in my opinion, a **** design.
 
Yeah, it kind of looks like a window strip - it has a groove in one side where it slots over the steel, and the other side is a fin type thing that presses up against the alloy skin.

This is from memory, but, unless yours is proper stuffed, you might have one of them still in place?

Its a horrible design - unless the alloy skin is off, you cant even get proper access with under seal when you've finished welding it up.

Filling the whole void with expanding foam would probably be better than factory!

Personally, I wouldn't use foam. It is likely to trap water against the panel through capillary action, and will be a nightmare if you want to weld in the area again.

Try drilling some holes, spraying in Dinitrol, and sealing the holes with epoxy putty.

That's the thing - theres no physical seal between inner and outer if memory serves me. that's why I thought there was meant to be a strip to stop junk and water flying up into the void.

I assumed you meant plate between outer and inner via weld and rivet or similar and fill with dinitrol then. I'll be spraying in all the cavities. Pillars etc.

It will help if you just spray cavity wax up into the void.
Or you could make a plate of metal, or indeed plastic, to fill the gap after spraying it in.

It's a bit like this stuff, but can't remember how deep the seal is?

Clips on the edge of the wheel arch where the panels are all spot welded together, HTH.
