Hello all,

I'm looking at stripping down and rebuilding the head on my Land Rover, I need to sort out the timing chain (I think its a bit loose) anyway so while I'm at it I was going to upgrade to an unleaded head.

I've been looking at Turner and ACR heads. Has anyone experience of these, or any other options.

I'm also quite interested in any experience of the "performance" heads. I'd quite look a few extra HP and lbft to get up and down these hills with less gear bashing.

Is the 9:1 ACR ported head worth £200 more than the Turner 8:1 gas flowed one?

Also anyone have any experience of the ACR profiled cam, does it give extra torque / efficiency?

Cheers

I had a high compression head fitted to one of my series 3's a few yeas ago. It made it a much more drivable and better vehicle. Personally i would go for the higher compression 9:1 ACR head and seeing as its ported as well then thats even better.

If your going to keep the vehicle always get the best you can afford as you will always want the 9:1 head after you have fitted the cheaper 8:1 head :D

Cheers....spose I'll have to save me pennies and get the ACR setup then! No doubt after umming and awing I'll get carried away and buy and SU carb and through pipe too....Though my mate's old twin choke webber keeps staring at me...

Where's the interest in that? That's like saying why don't I just buy a 2nd hand Land Cruiser!

Seriously though I think the ACR cam is a bit different to the 2.5 one. Does the 2.5 head swap onto a 2.25? Also, they claim that with carbs, straight thru and cams to get +43BHP (2.5 is only + 10BHP over 2.25)...That's why I'd like to hear from anyone who's tried their stuff to see if it is real or snake-oil....

Cheers

I was joking in the first part. I do _just want_ to take the engine apart and have the satisfaction of rebuilding it rather than just swapping a lump. I've spent ages doing all the ****ty jobs on the Landy now I'd like to do something I really enjoy - playing with engines...

But in the second part I'm not sure what I _would_ gain from a 2.5 head, other than lead-free. Would it increase compression? Torque? Power? or is it roughly the same? The claims for the ACR and Turner heads look convincing but I'm not sure they are accurate - that's why I asked in first place. 43HP+25% torque seems like a very worthwhile improvement!

fair enough,if you want to play its a good thing ,practicality is all i get to think about now ,claims are usually on high side with everything ,but ive dealt with acr a bit in the past and he was as good as he said ,id have a good talk with him ,not built one thats not std for 10 or more years so couldnt say ,compression ratio is 8 to one on the 2.5 like h/c 2.25
